Portugal advanced to the round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia in Toronto.

Bruno Fernandes had a great chance in the fourth minute, but Livakovic made a tremendous save. Renato Veiga missed the target with his header as Portugal dominated the early stages. Croatia did little in the half, and Rafael Leao skied his effort towards the halftime break.

In the second half, Nuno Mendes almost broke the deadlock after a powerful run. But it was Croatia who broke the deadlock when Ivan Perisic drilled the ball at the far post. Ronaldo then thought he had levelled, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Portugal were then awarded a penalty kick after Veiga was pulled by Vlasic. Ronaldo stepped up to score the goal and bring Martinez’s side level.

More drama was witnessed when Ramos rose high in the 4th minute of extra time to head the ball home. However, more drama was witnessed when Josko Gvardiol thought he had scored deep in added time, but VAR ruled out the goal.Portugal will play against Spain in the round of 16.
