Nairobi is gearing up to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, the first time the sport’s biggest global event will be held on African soil. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe recently met President William Ruto in Eldoret to discuss preparations for the historic championships.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a successful event, focusing on funding, anti-doping measures, and stadium readiness. Coe praised Kenya’s athletics heritage and urged fans to fill Kasarani Stadium every night to create a memorable atmosphere for athletes.

President Ruto assured that the government will provide all necessary resources to make the championships a success. He noted that Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is already being upgraded for AFCON 2027 and will receive further improvements ahead of 2029.

Nairobi earned the hosting rights through its strong record in staging major athletics events, including the 2017 World U18 Championships, the 2021 World U20 Championships, and the annual Kip Keino Classic.

The 2029 championships will follow Beijing 2027 and precede Munich 2031, bringing World Athletics’ flagship event to Africa for the first time and inspiring a new generation of athletes across the continent.
