The Nigeria Super Eagles were eliminated from the World Cup contention after losing to DRC Congo.

Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria the lead in the third minute of the game. Ngal’ayel Mukau had the chance to level things for Congo, but he failed to convert his close-range effort. However, the equalising goal came in the 32nd minute as Alex Iwobi was stripped of possession and Cedric Bakambu squared it for Elia to level things. The game ended 1-1 after extra time, and DRC Congo edged Nigeria 4-3 on post-match penalties.

Nigeria head coach Eric Shell apologised after earlier accusing DRC Congo of witchcraft. “Football is emotional. I reacted passionately after the match due to an argument with a Democratic Republic of the Congo staff member who tried to enter my area. I never intended to target the people or staff of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I respect them.” He said.

DRC Congo will now wait for the draw in Morocco before going for the 6 teams to battle for two places.
