President William Ruto announced that the Talanta Sports City Stadium will be renamed Raila Amollo Odinga International Stadium upon completion, honoring the late former Prime Minister and passionate football supporter.
Speaking at Nyayo National Stadium during Jamhuri Day celebrations marking Kenya’s 62nd independence anniversary, Ruto responded to calls from leaders like Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and citizens. Odinga, a long-time Gor Mahia patron, was celebrated for his love of sports, especially football.
The flagship 60,000-seater project along Ngong Road, aimed at the 2027 AFCON co-hosting with Uganda and Tanzania, stands at 68% completion by China Road and Bridge Corporation. It is slated for handover by March 2026 at a cost of about Ksh44.7 billion.
