Arsenal players react after loss to Lisbon

Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League after losing 5-4 on penalty kicks to Sporting Lisbon on Thursday evening at the Emirates Stadium.

Granit Xhaka gave Arsenal the lead in the first half and gave Arsenal a 3-2 aggregate lead in the tie. However, Arsenal were unable to add another goal to kill the tie completely and were also dealt a blow when William Saliba and Tomiyasu were forced off in the first half through injuries.

In the second half, Sporting Lisbon drew level through Pedro Goncalves long range effort which caught Ramsdale off his line and then goalkeeper Antonio Adan’s heroics were enough to send the Portuguese champions through, with the keeper pulling off several fine saves in extra time, including denying Trossard’s effort.

The match was to be decided by penalty kicks, and Sporting Lisbon scored all their penalty kicks through Jeremiah Justine, Ricardo Esgaiao, Inacio, Arthur Gomes, and Nuno Santos, who scored the winning penalty kick. For the Arsenal side, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard scored, but it was Gabriel Martinelli who missed the crucial penalty kick, which saw Arsenal bounce out of Europe.
