Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed his interest in managing one of Scotland’s leading football teams.
In Scotland, Celtic and Rangers are the dominant clubs, known for their large fan followings and historic rivalries that capture attention throughout the UK.
When asked if he would consider taking charge of Rangers, who were searching for a new coach following a challenging start to their season, McCarthy revealed that coaching either of these Glasgow clubs would be a remarkable career milestone. Rangers later appointed German manager Danny Röhl, less than a week after he initially ruled out the possibility. His arrival followed the breakdown of talks with Kevin Muscat.
Speaking to Best Betting Sites, McCarthy, who has made a strong start with Kenya’s national team, said that coaches aspire to operate at the highest tiers of football management.
“I am currently in Scotland, so you never know. One day I will submit my CV to Rangers because managing them would be like leading clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, or Manchester United in Scotland — that shows their significance. The same goes for Celtic. If the role opened up, it would be a dream job for any serious coach,” he explained.
The former UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto acknowledged the difficulties of securing such a prestigious position but emphasized that ambition motivates every coach.
“They are two giant clubs, and when chances like that arise, you must put yourself forward. The odds may be long; it might seem almost impossible, but that is every manager’s dream — to reach the pinnacle of the profession,” he added.
McCarthy began his coaching journey in 2017 with Cape Town City in the South African Premier Soccer League ( PSL). He quickly made an impact by helping the club achieve a top-three league finish and winning the 2018 MTN8 tournament, his first significant managerial achievement.
After departing Cape Town City in 2019, he took charge at AmaZulu FC in 2020, leading the team to a historic second-place finish in the PSL, which earned him the Coach of the Season title and a hotly contested spot in the CAF Champions League.
In 2022, McCarthy joined Manchester United as a first-team coach under Erik ten Hag, specializing in developing forwards and individual player skills. This period is credited with revitalizing Marcus Rashford’s performance.
By March 2025, McCarthy was appointed head coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, embarking on his international management career with the goal of boosting the team’s success on the African continent.
