The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will determine the outcome of the FKF Premier League promotion/relegation playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United after Tuesday’s second leg was abandoned at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The tie was halted after referee John Sulwe awarded Mombasa United a penalty following a corner kick. Sharks players protested, and some supporters invaded the pitch, forcing officials to call off the match.

At the time, Sharks led 2–1 through Patillah Omoto and Douglas Omanga, having earlier trailed to Rodgers Angal’s sixth-minute opener. Mombasa United had won the first leg 2–1, leaving the aggregate score level when play stopped.

FKF has yet to announce its next steps, but the matter is expected to go to the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee, chaired by Peter Kamau. With the new Premier League season due to start on Friday, the committee is likely to act quickly.

Officials will review reports from the referee, match commissioner, security personnel, and CAF Safety and Security Officers. Possible outcomes include awarding the match to either club, ordering it to resume from the point of abandonment, or classifying the incident under special regulations.

A recent precedent is the December 2025 Nairobi United vs Gor Mahia match, which was abandoned due to crowd trouble and later ruled force majeure, with the 1–1 scoreline upheld. However, the Sharks–Mombasa United playoff is governed by different rules.

The decision will decide which team plays in the FKF Premier League and which features in the National Super League. Any aggrieved club could potentially challenge the ruling at the Sports Disputes Tribunal or the High Court, as FKF currently has no operational Disciplinary and Appeals Committees.
