England captain Harry Kane is inching closer to a first-ever trophy after Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title rivals Bayer Leverkusen dropped points at the weekend.

Bayern won 4-0 against Heidenheim, with Kane among the scorers, taking their tally to 72 points, while Leverkusen could only draw 1-1 with St Pauli, leaving them on 64 points.

With four games remaining, Bayern could reclaim the Bundesliga title with a win this weekend, coupled with a Leverkusen defeat, while if Xabi Alonso’s team emerge victorious, the Bavarian giants would have to wait another week to be crowned champions.

That assurance is set to see Kane finally end his career curse of not winning a major title, having finished second in the Premier League and Bundesliga and also lost finals with his clubs and country.

Kane finished second in the Premier League with Tottenham and also lost the League Cup final with Spurs twice and he was second in the Bundesliga with Bayern last season, when Leverkusen won the title unbeaten, and also missed out on the German Super Cup.

The England striker lost the Euro final twice with the Three Lions, Gareth Southgate team’s falling to Italy at the delayed 2020 tournament and in 2024 when they were beaten by Spain.

Kane can, however, look forward to lifting the Bundesliga trophy either this month or in May, ending a long wait for a major career title.
