Liverpool have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Uruguayan defender Ronald Araújo on loan for the 2026/27 season, in a surprise move that will strengthen the club’s defensive options.
The agreement between the two clubs was reached on Friday, with reports indicating that the move has been approved by Barcelona sporting director Deco. Araújo is expected to move to Anfield on a season-long loan as Liverpool look to add experience and versatility to their defensive unit.
The reported agreement includes an option to buy Araújo at the end of the loan spell, meaning Liverpool would have the right to make the transfer permanent if they decide to do so. Importantly, the purchase is not mandatory, so Liverpool are not obliged to sign the defender permanently after the 2026/27 campaign. The exact value of the potential permanent transfer has not been publicly confirmed.
Araújo, 27, has been an important defender for Barcelona since establishing himself in the first team. Primarily a centre-back, he can also operate at right-back, giving Liverpool additional flexibility across the defensive line.
Born in Rivera, Uruguay, Araújo began his senior career with Rentistas before moving to Boston River. His performances in Uruguay attracted Barcelona, who signed him in 2018. He initially played for Barcelona B before making his senior-team debut in October 2019.
The move comes at a time when Liverpool are seeking greater defensive depth. The club have faced changes and injury concerns within their defensive department, increasing the need for an experienced player capable of covering multiple positions. Reports have specifically pointed to Araújo’s ability to play both centre-back and right-back as an attraction for Liverpool.
