Nicholas Musonye, chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has called on the Kenyan government to impose harsh penalties, including prison sentences, to stop the rampant vandalism of key sports venues.

In a recent Sporty FM interview, Musonye highlighted the severe damage at Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani) during the October 2025 public viewing of the late former Prime Minister Railia Odinga. Just months after costly government upgrades for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), vandals ripped out seats and destroyed toilets, he noted.

“This culture of impunity must end,” Musonye stressed. “CCTV footage exists, yet no one faces consequences. We can’t keep rebuilding at taxpayer expense with AFCON looming in June-July 2027.”

Co-hosting the tournament with Tanzania and Uganda means global eyes on Kenya’s facilities, including the under-construction Talanta Stadium. Musonye urged citizens to protect these assets and pushed for 1-2 year jail terms for offenders: “These venues are our future—let’s treat them that way.”
