Newcastle midfielder Joelinton received racial abuse after a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal last season.

The Brazilian, who cost £40 million to acquire from Hoffenheim in 2019, has been on fire under the former Bournemouth boss as a tenacious midfielder this season. Joelinton underwent a significant metamorphosis under Eddie Howe, one that was crucial to the Magpies’ qualification for the Champions League.

Speaking while on international duty with Brazil, Joelinton said that measures need to be taken. “Not on the pitch, no. But after the match against Arsenal, playing at home, I have received some messages with racist insults but it’s gone. It didn’t affect me.’ ‘It’s an important moment to speak about racism,’ he told reporters. ‘We have been talking about it for a long time. Still, many things need to be changed. ‘ We talk about combating racism, but we didn’t see much change. This is not something that has been happening now, but for a long time. And in the 21st century, we still see things like that. ” He said.
