June 18, 2023, will forever remain an iconic moment for Kenyan football as one of the most historic clubs in the FKF-PL made a comeback after 17 years in the woods.

Shabana FC booked their 2023-24 top-flight status after thumping Migori Youth 1-0 on Sunday at Gusii Stadium.

After the final whistle, thousands of football fanatics flocked to the streets of Kisii to celebrate their status.

Back in the 1990s till 2006, Shabana FC was among the FKF-PL heavy weights not until poor leadership cost the club.

The promotion will be a relief for Coach Sam Okoth, who was cautious about popping the champagne a week ago until their promotion was confirmed.

“We are not yet there. Do you remember what happened to Arsenal weeks ago when they thought they had won the league and things happened and they ended up finishing second in the table? That’s how a season can change in a flash,” he said.

“Until we are mathematically promoted, we have to remain focused and professional. It is something that I keep telling the boys every day because once you start celebrating prematurely, you are likely to lose focus, and before you know it, you’ll be out of the promotion race. We have remained committed throughout the season, and now more than ever, we have to put our best foot forward.”
