Kenya’s sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala has called time on his 2026 campaign. Medical scans confirmed a stress fracture in the heel bone (calcaneus) of his left foot.
Omanyala will sit out the Diamond League Final in Brussels (4–5 September). He will also miss the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest (11–13 September). After check-ups with doctors in France, he says he will take about six weeks to recover before resuming training.
“I’ve just started the recovery process. Today is day one… I’ve been advised to take about six weeks before I start training again,” he told the media.
Season highlights and 2027 outlook
Before the injury, Omanyala opened with wins in Addis Ababa (9.98) and Nairobi (9.96), helped Kenya set a 4x100m national record (38.27) in Nassau, and recorded five consecutive sub-10 runs including a 9.94 victory in Shanghai. The heavy schedule took its toll in Europe, and the developing heel fracture affected his form in Rome, Paris, and at the Commonwealth Games.
Looking ahead, he is planning an extended preseason targeting the 2027 World Championships in September, with his first races likely in April or May.
