EFA President Aleksander Ceferin shared his thoughts on why Rodri was chosen as the Ballon d’Or winner, despite fans and supporters arguing that the Brazilian winger, Vinicius Jr, deserved the trophy.
According to Ceferin, statistics show that Rodri displayed fair play and, despite being a holding midfielder, contributed more goals and assists compared to Vinicius Jr.
He further urged aggrieved fans to observe Vinicius Jr’s behavior towards referees in every game and form their own conclusions.
“They should review Vinícius’s season themselves to see how he interacts with referees, players, and fans in every match,” he said.
“A holding midfielder who hasn’t lost in 72 matches, created more goals than Vinícius, and scored 12 goals. The fair play rule has been part of the Ballon d’Or criteria since its inception, but Real Madrid complains because things aren’t going their way.
Rodri has outperformed Vinicius in both statistics and fair play, and he deserves it, just as Modrić did years ago for Madrid.”
