Former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has been appointed as the new Wolfsburg headcoach.The Austrian, 56, replaces Niko Kovac at the Volkswagen Arena after 15 months out of work.
Hasenhuttl previously managed RB Leipzig and led them to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga in 2017 before joining the Saints the following year.
Wolfsburg manager Kovac was sacked after a 3-1 loss at home to Augsburg leaving Wolfsburg struggling in 14th place.After leaving the club, the Croatian said that,
“I, as head coach, am particularly disappointed that we haven’t managed to turn things around, despite some promising signs. We wish the team, the whole club and their fans all the best for the rest of this season and beyond.”
Wolfsburg are just six points ahead of Mainz, who currently occupy 16th place and whoever finishes in that position will compete in the relegation play-off.
Hasenhuttl was appointed as the new boss at St Mary’s in December 2018, Hasenhuttl made history by being the first Austrian manager in the Premier League.
Southampton parted ways with him four years later and Wolfsburg will be his return to management.
