Manchester United suffered a dramatic exit as Brighton & Hove Albion came from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup third round.
Michael Carrick’s side started brilliantly, with Shea Lacey opening the scoring in the 8th minute before Mason Mount doubled the advantage just two minutes later in the 10th minute. United looked in complete control, but Brighton responded before halftime, with Charalampos Kostoulas reducing the deficit in first-half stoppage time.
The visitors completed the comeback in the second half as Pascal Groß equalized after a mistake in the United buildup. Maxim De Cuyper scored the goal that gave the visitors the lead to much disbelief of the Old Trafford fans. Bruno Fernandes’s effort from the outside of the box went high off the goal.
Speaking after the defeat, manager Michael Carrick took blame: “This was not acceptable. I take responsibility for this defeat. The performance towards the end of the second half—that’s on me,” he said.
