Gor Mahia’s 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign ended emphatically as the Kenyan champions were thrashed 5–1 by Egypt’s Pyramids FC in the second leg of the first preliminary round, played on Sunday at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo. With a 2–0 deficit from the first leg in Nairobi, K’Ogalo exited the competition 7–1 on aggregate.
First-leg context: a steep hill to climb
A week earlier, Pyramids had taken a commanding advantage with a 2–0 win at Nyayo National Stadium, thanks to first-half goals from Walid El‑Karti and Mahmoud Saber. Pyramids opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Walid El‑Khati (El‑Karti) rose highest to head past Gor goalkeeper Bryne Omondi. Second half: Gor improve, but defensive errors prove costly
After the break, Gor Mahia looked more cohesive, linking play through midfield and launching direct attacks toward Paul Okoth and Shariff Musa. Pyramids still created the clearer chance first, however, when Abdelrahman Magdy missed the target in the 58th minute after being set up by Ahmed Abdelkader.
Gor’s resistance held until the closing stages, when two critical mistakes led to further damage. In the 74th minute, Paul Ochuoga cleared off the line to deny Obama after he had beaten Omondi. Then, in the 90th minute, Omondi hesitated too long on a back pass from Frank Odhiambo, allowing Mostafa Zico to tap into an empty net for 4–1. Almost immediately, Mahmoud Zalaka dribbled past Omondi and scored; his shot took a deflection off Odhiambo’s attempted block to make it 5–1.

Pyramids FC advance to the next preliminary round, where they are scheduled to face South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu. Notably, former Nairobi United head coach Godfrey Oduor and ex‑Tusker striker Erick Otieno are attached to the Bentiu setup, adding a Kenyan connection to Pyramids’ next obstacle.
