Harambee Stars suffered a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to Gambia in Kasarani on Friday evening.
The national team started well as William Lenkupae saw his effort early on sail wide to the frustrations of the fans. Gambia opened the scoring when Sheriff Sinyan rose higher to meet a corner kick and head the ball home. Timothy Ouma thought he had levelled up the scores, but the flag went up for the offside. Yakub Minteh took advantage of a loose pass in midfield to double the lead for the away side. Minteh then turned provider when he made a cutback and Musa Barrow scored the third goal. McCarthy could not believe what was happening from the sidelines.
At half time, McCarthy made substitutions in the effort to salvage the game, but it was too late. Substitute and teenager Ryan Ogam got the consolation goal in the 81st minute to open his international scoring chart. Kenya’s slim chances of World Cup qualifying were officially ended.
