HAKIMI

Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi made history by winning the 2025 African Footballer of the Year award at the CAF ceremony in Rabat, becoming the first defender to receive the honor in 52 years and the first Moroccan winner since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.

This accolade followed a remarkable year for Hakimi, highlighted by his key role in PSG’s treble-winning season, which included the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, and UEFA Super Cup victories. Hakimi’s standout performances, such as scoring in the Champions League final and contributing both goals and assists throughout the season, set him apart from fellow nominees Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen.

Beyond his individual brilliance, Hakimi expressed pride in representing African football and thanked those who supported him from childhood to professional success. His win capped a night of Moroccan dominance at the awards, with teammates Ghizlane Chebbak named Women’s Footballer of the Year and Yassine Bounou awarded Goalkeeper of the Year.

Hakimi’s achievement signals a new era for African defenders and underscores Morocco’s rising football prominence on the continent. Despite a recent ankle injury threatening his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he remains hopeful about competing and aiming for the continental title.
