In the realms of AFCON, there have been few and far between special players that have lit the tournament with their dazzling brilliance in the field, and iconic goals.

Here are the all-time ten top scorers in the biennial tournament; let’s look.

  1. SAMUEL ETOO (CAMEROON)- 18 GOALS

Without a doubt, Samuel Etoo is one of the greatest African football players of all time. He has to his name two AFCON titles- 2000, and 2002.

  • LAURENT POKOU (IVORY COAST)- 14 GOALS

The fact that he achieved this feat in just two AFCON editions speaks volumes of what a talent he was. He was so good that Ivory Coast built a stadium in his honor- Laurent Pokou Stadium that will act as one of the stadiums that will host AFCON 2024.

  • RASHIDI YEKINI (NIGERIA)- 13 GOALS

Nigeria has been blessed with great players in their history. The likes of Jay Okocha, and Emmanuel Emenike.

But in terms of being prolific, Yekini was a beast. He helped Nigeria win the 1994 AFCON.

  • HASSAN EL- SHAZLY (EGYPT)- 13 GOALS

His incredible exploits were in the 1963 AFCON Edition where he scored an insane six goals.

  • HOSSSAM HASSAN (EGYPT)- 12 GOALS

Hassan is Egypt’s all-time leading goal scorer and was a key player in their AFCON triumphs in 1986 and 1998.

Honorable mentions to; Patrick Mboma (CAMEROON) with 11 goals, Didier Drogba (IVORY COAST) with 11 goals.
