Reigning AFCON champions Senegal were knocked out at the last-16 stage of the competition by hosts Ivory Coast, former Barcelona Franck Kessie scored the winning penalty in the shootout after the game ended 1-1 after extra time.
Senegal had looked set to end the curse that had seen no defending champions reaching the last eight since 2010 when Habib Diallo rifled home with just four minutes on the clock.
The hosts were better side as the game progressed as they ensured the champions did not have a chance to control the game. Ivory Coast second half substitute Nicolas Pepe missed a huge chance to level the score.
But few minutes later he redeemed himself by winning a penalty with four minutes remaining before the final whistle,a penalty which was converted by former Barcelona midfielder Frank Kessie.
After additional half-hour, neither side could break the deadlock, it came down to the shoot-out where the hosts scored all five to seal a famous triumph after Niakhate failed to convert his spot kick.
