Premier League champions Manchester City head to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on Erik ten Hag’s side, with Pep Guardiola insisting it is Liverpool rather than United who are his side’s biggest rivals.
“When I finish my tenure here, Liverpool will have been my rivals and our rivals,” said Guardiola. They have made us a challenge and helped make us a better team in all departments.
They have challenged us like no other team has done in my period here.There was one year with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] that was quite close – but overall it has been Liverpool.”
The previous fixture between the English between them was an FA Cup Final on June 3, 2023, with Manchester City claiming the win over their rivals Manchester United by a 2-1 scoreline.
Their last league meeting, however, went in favour of Manchester United, who beat their rivals 2-1 on January 14, 2023. Over the last five fixtures, Manchester City have won 4 while Manchester United have won ones.
As things stand, Manchester United and Manchester City have contested 190 games, with the former winning 78 compared to the latter’s 59; 53 have ended in a draw. The two have jointly won 100 trophies, with United again leading the count, 67 to 33.
United will hope Casemiro will be fit after the ankle injury he suffered playing for Brazil, but Amad Diallo, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are still ruled out. The game may also come too early for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
City will miss Manuel Akanji after he was sent off in last week’s victory over Brighton and midfielder star Kevin De Bruyne remains the only long-term absentee.
