Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in style by securing a convincing 3–0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute after a well-worked Arsenal attack. Bukayo Saka doubled the lead eight minutes after. Arsenal had several opportunities to score more. Bukayo Saka had a chance inside the box but could not find the finish. Christos Tzolis created space in a dangerous position, but his effort was saved by the Coventry goalkeeper.
Just after the break, Martin Ødegaard added a third after a lovely combination. Declan Rice saw a powerful effort blocked, while Mikel Merino also came close but failed to find the target. Coventry had limited chances, with Loum Tchaouna and Jack Rudoni unable to convert their opportunities.
Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta was happy with his side. “There was a lot to like. Obviously it was a great result, but the manner in which we started the game, the domination, clarity, understanding and growth in the game were really impressive. It was great because the start is always tricky.” He said.
