Lionel Messi’s historic World Cup journey with Argentina takes center stage as six of his iconic jerseys go up for auction. The collection, featuring the shirt he wore in the thrilling final against France, is poised to exceed £8m at Sotheby’s New York auction.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, describes this auction as a monumental moment in history, intricately tied to Messi’s status as the greatest player of all time.
With Messi’s unprecedented achievements in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including becoming the first to score in every stage, these shirts symbolize football excellence redefined. Sotheby’s will proudly exhibit these invaluable collectibles during the public bidding process from November 30 to December 14 at their New York headquarters.
While Messi played in all seven matches, only two of the three group stage shirts will be auctioned, as one was exchanged with Australia’s Cameron Devlin.
