Kenyan marathon runner Elid Kipchoge received the Princess Asturias Award for Sports for 2023 on Thursday from the Spanish organization.

Kipchoge was given sh 7.4m. In addition, the award, a diploma, and a symbol were presented to him by the 18-year-old Princess Leonor of Asturias in a Joan Miro sculpture.

During the Ineos Challenge in Vienna, Austria, Kipchoge set the record for finishing a 42-kilometer marathon in under two hours. He currently also holds the record for the quickest marathon time (2:01:09), which was established in Berlin.

Kipchoge took to his Twitter page to show his appreciation, saying, “It is an absolute honor to receive the Princess of Asturias Award. To be among a list of extraordinary laureates, all people from different walks of life. It motivates me in my goal to leave a legacy in this world through running”. He said.
