Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Best Goalkeeper award at the FIFA Awards on Monday evening in Paris.

The Argentina shotstopper was in hot form as he helped his country claim the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, as he was instrumental in beating the Netherlands in the penalty shootouts. In the final against France, he heroically saved Kolo Muani’s strike in the last minute of extra time and was able to save Coman’s penalty in the shootouts.

Martinez defeated Thibaut Courtois and Morrocco goalkeeper Bono to win the first award in his career for having an incredible year. However, Martinez missed the FIFA Pro Lineup as his place was taken by Real Madrid shot stopper Thibaut Courtois.

Speaking in his acceptance speech, Martinez said, “My family supported me in this, Aston Villa, and a lot of people on the Argentina side.” “It’s been a dream throughout my life to play for the national side.” He concluded.
