Harambee Stars drew 3-3 with Gambia on Thursday night at Ouattara Olympic Stadium in Ivory Coast.
Benni McCarthy began his era as the Harambee Stars head coach against high-ranking Gambia and managed to earn an important point. Both teams went goalless in the first half as Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno saved a spot kick by Musa Barrow.
In the second half, however, Musa Barrow redeemed himself with a brace while Brighton star Minteh scored the third goal. Harambee Stars scored their goals through Michael Olunga and substitute Mohammed Bajaber. Debutant William Lenkupae added the third goal. The draw means Kenya remained in fourth place with 6 points, while Gambia is in fifth with 5 points.
McCarthy spoke after the draw and said he is optimistic that they will qualify. “The teams sitting at the top took the opportunity to collect points early. We have five games to go, which means there are many points up for grabs. We are hopeful,” he said.
