Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher ripped down the Liverpool team after an embarrassing defeat by Real Madrid.

Liverpool seemed to have taken a commanding lead after going up 2-0 early in the game, but they ended up collapsing later in the game. Real Madrid went on to score five goals without a reply from Liverpool to take a huge advantage going into the second leg.

Speaking after the game, former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher slammed the poor defense from Liverpool, especially from Virgil Van Djik, and claimed he would take his spot in the team. “What makes me laugh, and I’m not that horrible, Virgil van Dijk said I wouldn’t get in that back four about two months ago.” I think I’d take his place at the moment. It’s unacceptable what we’re watching this season. “We keep looking for reasons and excuses, but no, it’s nowhere near good enough,” he said.

Liverpool will have to be at their absolute best if they are to have a chance in the second leg of the tie.
