RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol

RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol told the Guardian yesterday that RB Leipzig refused to let him leave during the January transfer window despite Chelsea’s agreement.

Chelsea were looking to strengthen their squad and pursued RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. Chelsea reached an agreement with the player and his agent, but RB Leipzig insisted they would not sell their defender mid-season. Chelsea went ahead and bought Benoit BaDiashille from Monaco, where he has settled in well and formed a good connection with Thiago Silva.

Gvardiol said that he accepted the decision but also said he wished he had taken the chance to play in the Premier League. “My agent called me and said that Chelsea is extremely interested, and, of course, you definitely think about a serious offer from a huge club like Chelsea,” he said. Leipzig said they didn’t want to sell me. In the end, I really struggled with that decision, but we didn’t come to an agreement. It is what it is. I am here, and I am fine with this because my idea had been to stay here. One season was not enough. “This is my second season; even one more would be great, but we will see,” he said.

Chelsea are currently in 10th place in the Premier League and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Southampton.
