On the day when English clubs announced their departure from the newly formed Super League in 2021, it was obvious that the project was doomed. But, three clubs remained and there was some hope between them.

But tonight, one of those clubs decided to bow out, leaving only two (Spanish) teams in the league of their own. And it can hardly be called a liga anyway.

According to numerous reports, Juventus have sent two letters to the addresses of Real Madrid and Barcelona, in which they inform their comrades that they have started all the legal procedures for leaving the Super league.

Soon enough, the official confirmation came via Juve’s social media accounts.

“Juventus Football Club informs that it has transmitted a communication to the two remaining clubs that, as Juventus, have not exercised their withdrawal from the Super League Project (Football Club Barcelona and Real Madrid Club de Futbol) in order to initiate a discussion period among the three clubs concerning the potential Juventus’ exit from the Super League Project” reads the short statement.

Super League’s new attack on European football: Sixty to eighty clubs model and 14 guaranteed matches

The bureaucratic process will take several weeks, but that Juve’s decision is final and will not be changed. The Super league was born as an idea in April 2021.

At first, there were 12 clubs in the story (Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, Inter and Milan), but day after day they gave up one by one.

The key day for this project, it turned out, was April 20, when the English clubs, under pressure from the local government, decided to withdraw.

A day later, Atletico, Inter and Milan confirmed their exit, and as the negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern failed at the same time, only Juve, Barca and Real remained on the Super league bumper.

There are speculations that Juventus made this move because they were being blackmailed by UEFA.

The process in Nyon is still ongoing against this club and there is a danger that it will be suspended from the European Cups for one or more seasons. The Italian giants addressed that too in their statement.

“The Company will proceed with any communications due under the law following the outcome of the interlocutions and evaluations regarding the above, clarifying that many of the reconstructed version published by the media about the contents of the communication (including any reference to alleged threats of potential sanctions by UEFA) are not true”.
