Lakers star Lebron James is set to switch his jersey number to his old 23, in honour of Bill Russell.

James wore Number 23 when he made his NBA debut in 2003 with the Cleveland Cavaliers and has since alternated between No. 23 and No. 6. Last season, he wore No. 6, which has since been retired by the NBA in memory of Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Bill Russell, who was wearing it when he set the record for most points scored in an NBA career.

The Lakers star is set to return for his 21st NBA season and will now return to his old number 23. The Lakers made the official announcement through their social media pages.

When receiving an award during the ESPY Awards last week, Lebron insisted that the day he felt he could not offer any help on the court, he would retire.
