Manchester United were eliminated from the EFL Cup by fourth-division side Grimsby.

Amorim’s side have still not won any game of the new campaign, and pressure is beginning to mount. They found themselves 2-0 down after just 30 minutes as goals by Vernam and Warren gave the home side a comfortable lead. Onana was brought back in goal but could have done better on the two goals.

In the second half, Bryan Mbeumo opened his account for United just 15 minutes from time, and Harry Maguire levelled the score for United in the 89th minute. The game was forced to penalties as there was no winner.

Grimsby scored through Kabia and Burns, but Oduor missed the third penalty, while Staunton and Brown scored the fourth and fifth penalties.United scored their first four penalty kicks through Fernandes, Mbeumo, Mount and Dalot. Cunha had the chance to win the game, but he missed his kick. Another penalty followed, and both teams were perfect until Mbeumo missed his kick, and United were eliminated.
