At 4 pm Saturday this week all roads will head to Kasarani Stadium for the 93rd edition of the Mashemeji Derby.
Here are important stats ahead of the clash:
This derby goes way back on May 5, 1968, in Nairobi City Stadium when these two gigantic clubs first clashed. Gor Mahia on the day clinched the first win after a hard-fought 1-0 in what would turn out to be one of the fiercest rivals in Kenya and East Africa at large.
The name ‘Mashemeji’ was a result of the ethnic origin. AFC Leopards was formed by Luhya while Gor Mahia was formed by Luo hence the nickname.
Out of the 92 games played, Gor Mahia has come out on top with 31 wins, while AFC Leopards have fallen short with 27 wins. 34 times the teams have shared the spoils.
In terms of the jerseys, Gor Mahia is renowned for wearing green jerseys while AFC Leopards are renowned for wearing blue and white jerseys.
Goals-wise, the former Gor Mahia duo of Sammy ‘Jogoo’ Onyango and Dan Sserunkama have both scored six goals hence are the clash’s top scorers.
