The men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, has been relegated from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after falling 12-7 to Canada in the playoff final.

A good start saw Nelson Oyoo give Kenya the lead in the third minute as he danced past the Canadians on the right having received the offload from Billy Odhiambo to go all the way for the first try of the game.

Anthony Omondi stepped up to take the conversion and made no mistake for the bonus points. Shujaa were dealt a blow in the first half when Kevin Wekesa walked off injured with John Okoth coming on to replace him.

With the gong to signal the end of the first half gone already, Josiah Morra landed Canada’s try that was successfully converted by Josiah Morra to see the game head into the break tied at 7-7.

John Okoth, who had been instrumental in the second half was sent to the sin bin with two minutes to play as Kenya battled with a man less Shujaa have been a core team since the 2002-2003 World Rugby Sevens Series season, surviving relegation narrowly in the 2011-2012 and 2018-2019 seasons but it was not to be this season
