Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final played on Sunday in New Jersey.
The defending champions took centre stage, aiming to defend their title. Spain started on the upper hand, controlling possession. Lamine Yamal had the first chance of the game, but his effort was deflected into Martinez’s hands. Mikel Oyarzabal had his effort easily saved by Martinez. Argentina offered little in attack in the first half.
After the halftime break, Spain continued their dominance as Cubarsi tested Martinez from long distance. Rodri also saw his effort sail high off the post. Simeone launched a counter-attack for Argentina, but Unai Simón easily collected his cross. Enzo Fernandez was sent off late in the game after receiving his second booking for a late tackle on Cubarsi. Lamine Yamal then saw his effort saved by Martinez as the game went to extra time.
During the extra time, lots of tired legs were seen as Cucurella launched an outside effort which went off target. Mikel Merino saw his header go wide of the post. In the second period of extra time, the breakthrough came through as Ferran Torres launched a powerful left shot into the top corner. Simeone had a chance for Argentina late in the game, but his effort went high. Spain managed to hold onto the win and lift the trophy they last won in 2010.
