Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s historic 1000m world record is finally in the books. World Athletics ratified the performance on Thursday, 3 September.
Monaco breakthrough enters the record books.
The 22-year-old Olympic champion ran 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League on 10 July. He shaved 0.13 seconds off the previous mark of 2:11.96 set by Noah Ngeny in Rieti in 1999. That marked Wanyonyi’s debut over the distance. He followed pacemakers through 400m in 50.95 seconds. He took the lead and beat Britain’s Jake Wightman (2:12.77) on the final lap.

- Men’s half marathon: Jacob Kiplimo (UGA) – 57:20 in Lisbon on 8 March, improving the prior ratified record of 57:30 by Yomif Kejelcha (ETH).
- Men’s 110m hurdles: Ja’Kobe Tharp (USA) – 12.75 (+1.0 m/s) at the NCAA Championships in Eugene on 10 June, breaking Aries Merritt’s long-standing 12.80 from 2012.
