Holders Liverpool booked a place in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup after beating Southampton 2-1.
Tyler Dibbling’s effort earlier in the game was comfortably saved by Kelleher in the Liverpool goal. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring after Quansah’s ball was deflected, and the Uruguayan slotted past McCarthy. Liverpool’s second came at the half-hour mark after brilliant teamwork by Gakpo and Endo freed Harvey Elliot, who finished the move. McAllister’s effort was brilliantly saved by McCarthy as the slot side was in control at halftime.
In the second half, Southampton scored their goal through, just at the hour mark, Cameron Archer, who curled past Kelleher. Southampton kept the pressure but could not find the leveller. Chiessa’s effort was cleared off the line for Liverpool as they managed to hold on to the win.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot was pleased to have Chiesa back from injury. “It’s good to see that he’s back and that he had a few good moments in the game”.”I saw some really good moments, and I saw some moments where I felt like, Ok, you can do better than this. It’s normal”.He said.
