Manchester City were defeated 3-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League first leg.
It was a night to forget for Pep Guardiola’s side, who went to the Bernabéu looking for a win. They had the first chance of the game through Jeremy Doku when his cross failed to be met at the far post. Real Madrid opened the scoring when Courtois sent a long ball which was met by Federico Valverde, who beat Donnarumma and opened the scoring. Minutes later Valverde was on target again after meeting Vinicius’ cross and firing into the bottom corner. He then got his hattrick after perfectly meeting Brahim Diaz’s chip and completing the first-half hattrick.
In the second half it was Manchester City who started well, and Semenyo saw his effort easily saved by Courtois. Real Madrid were awarded a penalty kick when Vinicius was brought down by Donnarumma in the box. Vinicius Jr stood up to take the penalty, but his effort was saved by the Italian. O’Reilly then dispossessed Thiago in the box, but Courtois made a glorious save to deny him.
Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola admitted that it was a tough result for them. “I have the feeling that it was better than the result says. But the result is here; we have one week, and at the Etihad we will see them. 3-0 is better than 4-0. “Tough result, we cannot deny it… but we’re going to try,” he said.
