Eliud Kipchoge is set to make his first race appearance in Africa this year at the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, May 24, in South Africa, and this time the moment will be especially personal. The marathon legend will line up alongside his wife, Grace Sugut Kipchoge, who is set to make her competitive road-running debut.

The couple, who have been married for more than 20 years and share three children — Lynn, Griffin, and Gordon — have largely kept their family life private. Grace, who is known to stay out of the spotlight, runs their commercial interests in Eldoret and has long been part of the support system behind Kipchoge’s remarkable career.

Kipchoge said Grace has been training well and encouraged her to focus on finishing the race with courage and patience. He noted that the experience will be life-changing for her, especially as she takes on her first major road race.

The Cape Town Marathon has grown into one of Africa’s biggest running events, with 27,000 athletes expected for the main race and another 17,500 taking part in the 10km and 5km Peace Runs and trail events. That huge turnout continues to strengthen its case to become Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major.

The race is now nearing the end of phase two of its candidacy process, with hopes of joining the elite global series that includes Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, and Sydney. Finishers in 2026 are also set to receive a provisional Abbott World Marathon Majors finisher’s star, underlining the event’s rising status.

Kipchoge, now 41, remains the headline attraction, but the field is packed with quality. Ethiopian Mohamed Esa, who recently ran a 2:04:49 season best in Chicago, is among the top challengers, while South African veteran Stephen Mokoka and local debutant Anthony Timoteus will carry home hopes.

The Cape Town race promises both sporting quality and emotional significance, with much of the attention likely to follow Kipchoge’s latest chapter — this time shared with his wife at the starting line.
