Substitute Mikel Merino scored late as Spain eliminated Portugal in the round of 16.
In what was to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last chance at the World Cup, Martinez’s side faced a major block as they came up against the in-form Spain side. Spain had the first chance when Dani Olmo released Oyarzabal through on goal, but the striker dragged his effort wide of the post. Diogo Costa was then forced into a double save to deny Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena. Portugal came close when Nuno Mendes’s effort was deflected into the crossbar.
In the second half, Portugal grew into the game, and Bruno Fernandes hit the side net through a volley. Dani Olmo saw his effort well blocked by Ruben Dias. Mikel Merino then scored the winner in added time after a lovely through ball by Ferran Torres. Portugal failed to level and eventually were eliminated.
