Kenya’s Malkia Strikers will return to continental action with history firmly on their side as they prepare to defend their African Women’s Volleyball Championship crown in Nairobi.
The 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship is scheduled to take place in Nairobi from 23 August to 5 September 2026, with 16 national teams expected to compete for the continental title. The tournament will also serve as an important pathway towards the 2028 Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Championship.
Kenya enters the competition as the reigning African champion and the most successful team in the history of the women’s championship, having won a record 10 titles.
The Malkia Strikers captured their 10th crown in 2023 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, ending an eight-year wait for the trophy. Kenya defeated Egypt 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-14) in the final, with Sharon Chepchumba producing a standout performance and earning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
Kenya’s championship triumphs have come in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2023. Their dominance has established the Malkia Strikers as the benchmark of women’s volleyball in Africa.
The 2026 championship now presents Kenya with another opportunity to strengthen that legacy on home soil. A successful title defence would take the Malkia Strikers to 11 African titles and further extend their lead at the top of the continental honours list.
However, the challenge will be significant, with several of Africa’s strongest volleyball nations set to compete in Nairobi.
For the Malkia Strikers, the mission is clear: defend their crown, make history at home and add title No. 11 to Kenya’s remarkable continental record.
