Kenya’s beloved Raila Amolo Odinga, who was not only a towering political figure but also a devoted patron of Kenyan football, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, 15 October. He succumbed to a heart attack while receiving treatment in Kochi, India.
Beyond his renowned political career, Raila’s passion for football was evident throughout his life. He actively supported local football clubs, particularly Gor Mahia, where he served as a dedicated patron. Gor Mahia expressed profound sorrow at his passing, honoring him as a guiding light and steadfast supporter who played an invaluable role in the club’s history.
In his youth, Raila was no stranger to the sport, having played for Luo Union FC and later Bunge FC during his time as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata. His love for the game carried on well into his later years.
Raila collapsed during a morning walk at the Ayurvedic hospital where he was receiving care alongside his daughter, Rosemary Odinga. Medical staff confirmed that he suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. local time. Preparations for his repatriation are currently underway in coordination with Indian authorities.
His commitment to Kenyan football remained unwavering until the very end. Raila was a familiar presence at recent Harambee Stars matches during the CHAN tournament, where he celebrated their successes and personally rewarded players for their performances. Just before his passing, he generously contributed KSh 10 million to Gor Mahia to assist with the club’s logistical needs. Furthermore, his political party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), organized a 20th-anniversary tournament in Mombasa, which Gor Mahia won—a heartfelt tribute to his enduring legacy in Kenyan football.
Raila Odinga leaves behind a legacy rich in dedication, advocacy, and an unparalleled love for both his country and the sport he cherished. His memory will continue to inspire generations in politics and football alike.
