Ajax confirmed yesterday that head coach Maurice Steijn has left the club via mutual consent.

They have only managed one victory in their first seven games, giving up 16 goals, and are presently ranked 17th in the standings. Ajax suffered their fourth straight league defeat on Sunday away at Utrecht, where the hosts rallied for a 4-3 victory behind a stoppage-time goal from Oscar Fraulo.

Speaking after being sacked, Maurice Steijn wished the team luck in the future. “This morning, I sat down with the board, and we continued our talks later this afternoon. “We came to the conclusion that this is what is best for Ajax, although I regret that. But I failed to do so. I want to thank the supporters and the people I have worked with here, and I hope Ajax will find its way up again soon.” He said.
