A supporter linked to Real Oviedo has been handed a nine-month prison sentence after being found guilty of racially abusing Marcus Rashford during a match. The incident occurred while Rashford was taking a corner kick, with the fan directing offensive racial slurs toward the player. The abuse was captured on video, which played a key role in the legal proceedings.
According to the ruling, the offender may avoid serving time in prison if he complies with several conditions set by the court. These include paying a fine of €2,000, completing a mandatory anti-racism education program, and accepting a three-year ban from attending football matches at stadiums.
The decision reflects growing efforts within Spanish football and the wider sporting world to address racism more firmly. Authorities are increasingly moving beyond fines and short-term bans, opting for legal consequences that emphasize both punishment and rehabilitation.
This case adds to a series of actions taken across Europe to combat discrimination in football, reinforcing the message that racist behavior will not be tolerated in stadiums or society.
