Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has ruptured his ACL and is expected to be sidelined for months.

The French defender, who was signed from Leicester City last summer, did not travel to the USA with the squad as he was injured. Reports suggest that he may be sidelined for an extended period, going up to the whole season.

Chelsea yesterday released a statement confirming the injury. “Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery. The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club’s pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required. Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.” Read the statement.

The London-based club will assess their options before deciding whether another defender will be needed. They have insisted that Lewi Colwill is not for sale. They are, however, still pushing to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.
