Josephat Lopaga scored the only goal three minutes into the match, guiding Kakamega Homeboyz to a 1-0 victory over Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium. He dedicated the goal to the children of his hometown, Baragoi in Samburu County, a region known for its history of banditry and insecurity. “I’m from Baragoi, which is why people call me Baragoi. Despite the challenges the area faces, scoring in the FKF Premier League is a proud achievement for me,” Lopaga said.
His goal earned Homeboyz their first win of the season after a goalless draw against Mara Sugar in the opener. Lopaga, a former Posta Rangers striker, joined the club in the off-season as a free agent after leaving Belarusian side Dynamo Brest.
The story of Baragoi is one of resilience amid recurring bandit attacks, cattle raids, and insecurity, making Lopaga’s success an inspiring message for the youth in his community. “It’s a motivation for the young kids back home in Samburu County. Seeing me play shows them football is a path they can follow to achieve their dreams,” he added.
This narrative highlights both his personal triumph and the broader context of his roots in a troubled region.
